Professional Development
 
Quality teachers are the single greatest determinant of student achievement.  The mission of the North Carolina State Board of Education is that every public school student will graduate from high school globally competitive for work and post-secondary education and prepared for life in the 21st century.  This mission requires a new set of skills that educators must use daily.
 
According to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards Commission, the different demands on 21st century education dictate new roles for teachers in their classrooms and schools.   Distinguished educators not only participate in professional development activities aligned with goals and student needs, they also apply and implement skills attained from professional development consistent with its intent.  The Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education is committed to ensuring that all employees have access to high quality professional development opportunities.

  • Focused on improving classroom practice and increasing student learning
  • Embedded in the daily work of teaching
  • Cultivated in a culture of collegiality that involves sharing knowledge and experience on the same student improvement objectives
  • Supported by modeling and coaching or other forms of assistance to support the transfer of new knowledge and skills to the classroom
  • Assessed for effectiveness in achieving identified learning goals, improving teaching, and assisting all students in meeting challenging academic standards
